DORIAN.

Dorian knew it was the hard truth, but it did not mean he had to like it. His people probably sensed him as a coward. Their newly crowned king leaving them to die, even if they were already doomed from the start, they would think he tried nothing to protect them. “Well I doubt they see me that way.”

“Skulls bay.” He nods. They would need all of the allies they could get and with Aelin’s past she was bound to have some favors to cash in. While Dorian himself had nothing. Who would ally with the King of Ardalan? He was different from his father and he vowed to undo all the pain he’s caused, but he would always carry that weight on his shoulders. The hair on his skin raises as Aelin’s shoulder met his, a bolt of electricity running through his body. There was no gods damned way she couldn’t feel that. Regardless of the mate bond, he knew of her feelings for Rowan and he would not interfere. She deserved to be happy. He draws a shuddering breath and smiles, “I’m not looking forward to Skulls Bay. I hate the heat.”

It was that JOLT that sends her into silence again, has her sliding AWAY from him on the small wooden bench. Aelin had suspected that Dorian was her MATE from the moment their magic entwined the day they brought down the Glass Castle, the world shattering around them. It was confirmed when she felt that witch drag her iron through him, and then she KNEW. But she couldn’t bring herself to bring it up now, not until her feet were under solid ground.

She nods.          “ Yes. I have a few life debts OWED to me and I intend to cash them all in before this war is done. ”      Rolfe, the Pirate Lord of Skull’s Bay. She didn’t have a life debt to dangle in front of him; no, not with the way she had WRECKED his fleet and his city four years ago. The Queen of Terrasen had something else up her sleeve to ensure he would join her cause, especially with that magic map of his.

“ I could throw you overboard, if you’d prefer. ”

Another flash of that wicked grin.      “ I’m sure the waters great. ”

“Doesn’t sound like it.” Dorian scoffs as he crosses his arms. He wondered if she thought him to be weak—- he was not weak, he vowed to never be weak or afraid again. He sighs and holds his head in his hands, “I’m sorry. I’m just— stressed I suppose. I am worried about my people I… I should not have left them Aelin, you should have left me I should be there protecting them. Instead I am running away.”

“I do trust you, I just hope you have a plan or you can at least give me a clue as to where we are headed. I’d like to be prepared.”

Aelin wrinkles her brows before moving from her spot to sit beside him, their shoulders brushing lightly against one another. She can see the PAIN in his eyes behind every word, shallowing hard against it and the bare truth of her words. Lying would do neither of them any good.          “ There was nothing I could do, nothing you could do. Rifthold was doomed the moment those witches took flight. You are Adarlan’s BEST CHANCE. ”

She knew all too well the feeling of RUNNING, of betraying your people. She had felt the way the moment Darrow had shunned her from her own country.         “ This is where you must set an example for them. Show them that you are not running, but fleeing to make ALLIANCES to protect them. I am hoping to gain an ally Skull’s Bay. ”

“I can defend myself, you know.” Perhaps not as well as she could, he more so relied on his…immensely unreliable abilities. He bites the inside of his cheek as his brows drew together. “I had it— nevermind.” It was useless to lie to her. Be it the bond that lay between him, but anyone with eyes could see that Dorian had barely made it out. If it weren’t for Manon’s interference and Aelin’s quick thinking he was sure his head would be served on a platter before Erawan, even better, another puppet.

He nods, “Thank you.” An awkward silence fills the air as he struggles to push down the words he desperately wants to say, if she can feel it too. “Please tell me you know where we are headed.”

“ I have no doubt. ”     She replies with equal calm, Ashryver eyes never leaving him as she lounges against the edge of the boat. He had amazing abilities, that raw magic that was only gifted to so few. Though, even with such a gift, she knew he was no match against a legion of witches who had been playing this game far LONGER than any of them.

Raising a brow, Aelin resists the URGE to bring up that bond. If the King of Adarlan had any inkling that it was there, tethering them together, he gave no indication. She only smiles in response, a WICKED and cunning thing.         “ Don’t trust me ?

They sit in silence as the boat drifts along the coastline, tension filled the air between them. “T-Thank you.” He whispered hoarsely trying to forget the screams of his dying people. The witches voice telling him to run, Aelin at his heels. They had barely made it out alive. “How did you know?” He wondered if it were due to this… this thread that seemed to connect them to each other. A mate bond, he’s heard. But he kept his mouth shut because she wasn’t his, or well… she didn’t know and he didn’t want to be the bearer of bad news. “Does everyone know of the witches plans?” Everyone but him?

THE QUEEN OF TERRASEN is silent for a moment, arms crossed over her chest as she studies the other before her. The slight shake of her head is the only response she gives, her mind still reeling from the force that had almost brought her to her knees in the Glass Castle.

The mating bond. She had felt it snap into the place the moment turquoise eyes met those of swirling sapphire.

“ No. I found out only because I saw them sailing past on their wyverns. Headed straight to Adarlan. ”           Aelin wills her features into neutrality. She would have to deal with the bond later.     “ You’re lucky I got there in time. ”
